Hyundai will launch a smaller, lower-priced electric SUV in India between January and March 2027, and its management has named it the Ioniq P. Hyundai has announced no price or launch date, and Hyundai Motor India has not yet confirmed the name.
Where the name came from
The Ioniq P name came up during Hyundai's third-quarter 2026 earnings call with analysts. Hyundai said the Ioniq P would come to India after the new Bayon. Management did not explicitly link the name to the HE1i project. Treat Ioniq P as the expected name until Hyundai Motor India confirms it.
When it arrives
The launch window is the fourth quarter of fiscal 2027. Tarun Garg, MD and CEO of Hyundai Motor India, said Hyundai was fully geared up to launch its dedicated mass-market EV in that quarter. Under India's fiscal year, that means January to March 2027. The official debut is expected in January 2027. That is later than the end-of-2026 timeline indicated earlier.
Hyundai has not said when bookings or deliveries will start.
What makes it different
The Ioniq P will be Hyundai's first EV built in India. Production will take place at Hyundai's Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu. It is expected to use the E-GMP (K) platform. The battery cells will be imported at first.

The Inster EV sold abroad uses 42 kWh and 49 kWh battery packs. Hyundai has not confirmed either size for the India model.

Our view: an India-built Hyundai EV positioned below the Creta Electric fills a clear gap in the brand's line-up. Whether it is worth waiting for depends on a price and range that Hyundai has not yet revealed.
