Buying a CNG car in Mumbai: factory-fitted vs retrofit, gas price, road tax and boot space

By Arjun Ramanarayanan, IndiCar · Published 28 October 2026 · Tips

CNG costs Rs 89 per kg from October 1. A factory-fitted car keeps its full warranty while a retrofit usually voids it. How gas price, road tax, kit cost and boot space compare.

If you want a CNG car, buy one with factory-fitted CNG. It keeps the full warranty and comes endorsed on the registration from new. A company-fitted kit may cost almost the same as a retrofit, though it can cost more. Gas is Rs 89 per kg from October 1 at MGL's announced rate. Published tables show Maharashtra road tax on CNG below petrol, but they disagree on the exact CNG rate, so confirm the rate before you pay.

CNG price: Rs 89 per kg from October 1

MGL raised its CNG price by Rs 1 per kg from October 1, taking the rate in Mumbai and adjoining areas to Rs 89 per kg. That retail price includes all State and Central taxes. MGL is the sole authorised distributor of CNG and PNG in the city, Thane urban and adjoining municipalities, and Raigad district.

Third-party listings for nearby areas do not match MGL's figure or each other.

AreaRate per kgBasis
City and adjoining areasRs 89MGL, from October 1
Thane and PalgharRs 85.75Third-party listing, October
Navi MumbaiRs 105.36Third-party listing, October
Navi MumbaiRs 81.00Third-party listing, September

The two listings for that last area differ widely, so treat MGL's Rs 89 as the reference and read the rate displayed at the pump.

Where you can fill up

MGL says it has more than 350 CNG stations across its network, including Thane and Raigad. Its brochure mentions a 400th station. As the sole authorised distributor in the region, MGL supplies the CNG you fill up with.

Factory-fitted vs retrofit

The difference that matters most is warranty and paperwork, not the kit itself.

PointFactory-fitted CNGAftermarket retrofit
WarrantyFull warranty retainedEngine and fuel-system warranty voided, even with top-brand sequential kits
RegistrationEndorsed from newChange of fuel type must be endorsed at the RTO
InsuranceConfiguration matches the policyIf unendorsed, non-compliant, and a claim can be rejected
Kit costMay cost almost the same as a retrofit, or moreRs 42,000 to Rs 55,000 for a sequential kit with a 60L cylinder; Rs 55,000 to Rs 85,000 for an ARAI-approved kit with proper RTO paperwork

A retrofit at an independent workshop usually voids whatever factory warranty the car has left. An unendorsed retrofit also gives the insurer grounds to reject a claim, which is a larger risk than the kit price.

What each step up adds

  • Petrol only: no kit and no endorsement step. You pay the higher petrol road tax rate.
  • Petrol plus retrofit: adds CNG for Rs 42,000 to Rs 85,000 depending on the kit and paperwork, plus an RTO endorsement. You give up the engine and fuel-system warranty. This suits an older car with no warranty left to lose, provided the endorsement is done.
  • Factory-fitted CNG: adds CNG with the full warranty intact and the registration already endorsed. This suits anyone buying new who plans to run on CNG.

These steps compare purchase cost, warranty and paperwork only. Fuel economy and running costs are not covered here, so this is not a full petrol vs CNG cost verdict.

Maharashtra road tax: CNG is listed lower, but sources differ

One published table puts CNG cars one slab below petrol. Treat it as indicative, not settled, because the sources conflict on the CNG rate.

Ex-showroom pricePetrolCNG/LPG
Up to Rs 10 lakh11%8%
Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh12%9%
Above Rs 20 lakh13%10%

Published tables do not all agree. Another one shows CNG at 8% in the Rs 10 lakh to Rs 20 lakh slab. The Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Tax (Amendment) Act, 2025 reportedly took effect on July 1 and raised CNG car tax by 1 percentage point, but the sources do not settle which rate applies today. We cannot say for certain which rate you will pay, so check the figure on your dealer's written quote.

Worked examples at a Rs 10,00,000 ex-showroom price also differ on petrol, though both put CNG at Rs 80,000:

ExamplePetrol road taxCNG road tax
Example 1Rs 1,20,000Rs 80,000
Example 2Rs 1,10,000Rs 80,000

Company-registered and imported vehicles pay a flat 20% regardless of fuel type or price. IndiCar gives you a written breakup with the exact road tax line before you book.

The petrol-to-CNG price gap on the Brezza

On the Maruti Brezza, the CNG version costs more than petrol in both listings below.

VariantListing 1Listing 2
Lxi Petrol 1.5L ManualRs 9.82 lakhRs 9.7 lakh
Lxi CNG 1.5L ManualRs 10.74 lakhRs 10.6 lakh

On 24 Aug 2026 the LXi CNG, ZXi CNG and ZXi CNG dual-tone variants got a Rs 5,000 price hike. Whether the higher purchase price pays back depends on running costs, which these figures do not cover.

Boot space with an underbody tank

The Brezza CNG is listed at 328 litres, the same as the petrol version. Maruti places the CNG tank under the body rather than in the boot. Maruti has not published official boot figures, so treat 328 litres as reported. If luggage space has kept you away from CNG, an underbody tank removes most of that objection.

New factory CNG options

Mahindra launched the XUV 3XO ZNG on 20 October 2026, priced from Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 12.27 lakh ex-showroom. It is Mahindra's first factory-fitted CNG variant of a mainstream model. More factory options mean less reason to retrofit. You can browse all new cars with on-road prices to see what is on offer, or run any car through the on-road price calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the CNG price from October 1, 2026?

MGL raised the price by Rs 1 per kg from October 1, taking it to Rs 89 per kg in its city and adjoining areas. The retail price includes all State and Central taxes.

Does a CNG retrofit void the car's warranty?

Usually, yes. An aftermarket kit voids the engine and fuel-system warranty, even with top-brand sequential kits. Factory-fitted CNG keeps the full warranty.

Does a retrofitted CNG kit need RTO approval?

Yes. The change of fuel type must be endorsed at the RTO. An unendorsed retrofit is non-compliant, and the insurer can reject a claim because the car does not match the policy.

How much does a CNG retrofit kit cost?

A sequential kit with a 60L cylinder typically costs Rs 42,000 to Rs 55,000 in 2026. A genuine ARAI-approved kit with proper RTO paperwork costs Rs 55,000 to Rs 85,000.

Is road tax lower on CNG cars in Maharashtra?

Published tables list CNG lower: 8%, 9% and 10% against 11%, 12% and 13% for petrol across the same price slabs. Sources differ on the exact CNG rate, and a 2025 amendment reportedly raised CNG tax by 1 percentage point from July 1, so confirm the rate on your written quote.

Does the Brezza CNG lose boot space?

Reportedly not. Maruti places the CNG tank under the body, and the Brezza CNG is listed at 328 litres, the same as petrol. Maruti has not published official boot figures.
