Strong and mild hybrid cars in Maharashtra: road tax, registration and sample on-road prices in 2026
By Arjun Ramanarayanan, IndiCar · Published 2 November 2026 · Tips
Maharashtra's 2025 EV policy fully waives road tax and registration fees for EVs. Hybrids are not confirmed for that waiver, and a mild-hybrid Grand Vitara is charged road tax at 12%.
In Maharashtra in 2026, the full road tax and registration fee waiver applies to electric vehicles. Hybrids are not confirmed for it. One price list charges the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Sigma mild hybrid road tax at 12%. Reports conflict on strong hybrids. Budget for road tax on any hybrid unless your written price breakup shows otherwise.
What the 2025 EV policy exempts
The Maharashtra Electric Vehicle Policy, 2025 exempts EVs from motor vehicle tax and from registration certificate issuance and renewal fees. The exemption covers every EV sold and registered while the policy runs, from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2030.
The policy was issued under GR No. MVR-0125/C.R.13/Tra-2 dated 23 May 2025 and notified on 27 May 2025. It replaces the EV Policy 2021. The waiver is written for electric vehicles. Nothing in the policy facts extends it by name to hybrids.
Where hybrids stand under the new policy
Published accounts disagree. Treat any claim of a hybrid road tax waiver as unconfirmed until it appears on your own price breakup.
- One trade guide says the full waiver does not automatically cover hybrids and that only battery-electric vehicles get the full treatment.
- Another report says hybrids, including strong hybrids and plug-in hybrids, get no direct cash incentives under the 2025 policy.
- A summary of the earlier Maharashtra policy gives a 100% road tax and registration fee exemption for EVs, 50% for strong hybrids and 25% for CNG vehicles. That describes the policy the 2025 one replaced.
- One state-wise guide lists a 100% road tax waiver for "electric and hybrid cars". This is the outlier among the accounts above.
Because the accounts conflict, confirm the road tax treatment on your own written price breakup before relying on any waiver.
Road tax slabs for petrol cars
Maharashtra charges petrol cars road tax by ex-showroom price, in three slabs. One rate table adds a 2% road safety cess, charged on the tax amount, not on the car's price.
| Ex-showroom price | Road tax (petrol, individual) |
|---|---|
| Below Rs 10,00,000 | 11% |
| Up to Rs 20,00,000 | 12% |
| Rs 20,00,000 and above | 13% |
If the car is registered in a company's name, the rate is a flat 20%, according to the same rate table. That matters more than the slab: a company-registered car pays this higher rate whichever slab its price falls in.
The Grand Vitara Sigma mild hybrid, at Rs 10.77 lakh ex-showroom, is charged at 12% in one price list, which matches the middle slab.
Sample hybrid on-road prices
The prices below are published on-road figures for Mumbai, apart from the Delta Plus, Zeta Plus and Alpha Plus strong hybrid rows, which come from a Maharashtra-wide listing. Where a second list gives a different figure for the same version, both are shown.
| Model and version | Type | Ex-showroom | On-road |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Sigma Petrol MT | Mild hybrid | Rs 10.77 lakh | Rs 12,33,935 |
| Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Delta Plus | Strong hybrid | Rs 16,63,300 | Rs 19,28,635 (another list: Rs 18,96,580) |
| Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Zeta Plus | Strong hybrid | Rs 17,91,600 | Rs 20,76,243 |
| Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Alpha Plus | Strong hybrid | Rs 19,50,200 | Rs 22,58,711 (another list: Rs 22,21,579) |
| Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara Alpha Plus Hybrid CVT DT | Hybrid | Rs 19,65,600 | Rs 22,83,665 |
| Toyota Innova Hycross VX 7STR Hybrid | Hybrid | Rs 25,72,000 | Rs 30,04,573 (another list: Rs 32.78 lakh) |
Two of these listings itemise their charges. The Grand Vitara Alpha Plus Hybrid CVT DT carries RTO of Rs 2,38,222, insurance of Rs 55,470 and road safety tax of Rs 4,717. The Innova Hycross VX 7STR Hybrid carries RTO of Rs 3,36,710 and insurance of Rs 63,456.
The lists also disagree with each other. The Innova Hycross VX 7STR Hybrid appears at Rs 30,04,573 in one and Rs 32.78 lakh in another. Before you book, IndiCar gives you a written, itemised breakup for the exact version, so you can check whether road tax has been charged.

How other states treat strong hybrids
Some states give strong hybrids a road tax break that Maharashtra's 2025 policy does not spell out.
- Delhi gives strong hybrids a 50% road tax discount.
- Uttar Pradesh grouped strong hybrids with EVs for zero registration charges. Industry estimates put the resulting cut in strong hybrid on-road prices there at up to Rs 4 lakh.
Neither rule applies to a car registered in Maharashtra. Register in the state where you live and use the car, and price it on that state's rules.
What this means for your budget
Do not assume a road tax waiver on a hybrid in Maharashtra. One price list charges a mild hybrid road tax at 12%. If a breakup shows a hybrid with zero road tax, confirm it in writing rather than budgeting on it.
If you register through a company, the flat 20% rate is the larger factor in the on-road price.
