India Car Sales Report July 2026: Brand-Wise Numbers, Winners & Verdicts
By IndiCar · Published 1 August 2026 · Market_insights
Maruti Suzuki posted its best-ever July with 34% growth, Tata's EVs crossed 15,000 units for the first time, and Nissan grew 218% YoY. Here's the full brand-wise breakdown of India's July 2026 car sales, with a verdict on why each manufacturer moved the way it did.
India's carmakers dispatched their July 2026 wholesale numbers on August 1, and the headline is simple: almost everyone grew, and several brands grew a lot. Maruti Suzuki logged its highest-ever July, Tata Motors' EV wholesales broke 15,000 units for the first time, and Nissan's small base turned a Tekton launch into 218% year-on-year growth. Behind the good headline numbers, though, the story splits by brand — some of this is genuine demand, some of it is a weak July 2025 comparison, and some of it is simply that the SUV segment keeps eating the rest of the market.
Every figure below is a manufacturer's own wholesale dispatch number (factory to dealer) reported to SIAM or disclosed in the company's own press release on or around August 1, 2026 — not FADA retail registrations, which track actual customer sales and get released roughly a week later, once RTOs across the country report in. The two numbers can diverge, sometimes sharply, in months where dealers are stocking up ahead of a launch or a festive season. We've flagged that distinction wherever it matters.
The industry-wide picture
Passenger vehicle wholesales rose around 20.6% year-on-year in July 2026, with the SUV segment alone accounting for roughly 65-66% of every passenger vehicle sold in the country. Three things are doing most of the work here: a genuinely weak July 2025 to compare against, the GST rationalisation that took effect on September 22, 2025 (which cut the rate on eligible small cars from 28% to 18% and simplified the slab structure for larger vehicles), and a new-model pipeline that hasn't slowed down all year. Early FADA retail estimates for the first part of July pointed to industry-wide retail growth in a similar range, suggesting this isn't purely a wholesale stocking effect — actual showroom footfall is up too.
Maruti Suzuki — the clearest winner of the month
Maruti Suzuki sold 2,41,421 units in total (domestic plus exports plus OEM supply) in July 2026, up 34% from 1,80,526 a year earlier. Strip out exports and OEM deliveries and domestic passenger vehicle sales alone hit an all-time high of 1,96,203 units, a 43.4% jump over July 2025's 1,37,776. Every segment grew: mini cars (Alto, S-Presso) more than doubled to 12,634 units, the compact segment (Swift, Baleno, Dzire, WagonR, Celerio, Ignis) rose to 90,822 units, and utility vehicles — Brezza, Fronx, Ertiga, Grand Vitara, Victoris, e Vitara, Invicto, Jimny and XL6 combined — climbed to 78,851 units.
Our verdict on Maruti
This is the market leader getting the full benefit of a rising tide rather than one specific product. Maruti's growth is broad across mini, compact, and UV segments at once — that's not a single hit model, it's distribution and portfolio breadth doing the work. The Grand Vitara and newer Victoris give Maruti genuine UV credibility where it used to lean almost entirely on hatchbacks and the Brezza, and that's exactly the segment carrying the market. A weak July 2025 base flatters the growth percentage, but the absolute number — nearly 2 lakh domestic units in a single month — is real and unprecedented.
Tata Motors — EVs cross a new threshold
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles reported total sales (domestic plus international) of 63,760 units, up 59% from 40,175 a year ago; domestic sales came in at 62,611 units, up 58.4%. The number worth underlining is the EV portfolio: Tata's electric wholesales crossed 15,000 units in a single month for the first time, at 15,217 units, up 113.6% year-on-year. The Punch also posted its highest-ever monthly sales.
Our verdict on Tata
Tata is the one brand in this list where the growth story is genuinely product-led rather than base-effect-led. Doubling EV volumes in a year, while the rest of the industry's EV push has been more gradual, says Tata's early bet on the Nexon EV/Punch EV/Curvv EV range is now converting at scale — helped by falling battery costs and a wider charging network in metro India. The Punch's record month also shows the compact-SUV price band (under ₹8 lakh) is still where Tata's bread and butter is, even as the EV story gets the headlines.
Mahindra — still the SUV specialist, still riding the SUV wave
Mahindra & Mahindra's total auto sales rose 26% to 1,03,860 units. Domestic utility vehicle sales — its core passenger business — grew 20% year-on-year to 60,048 units, while commercial vehicles grew 23% to 25,204 units.
Our verdict on Mahindra
Mahindra doesn't sell hatchbacks or sedans anymore — its entire passenger lineup (Thar, Thar Roxx, Scorpio, Scorpio N, XUV 3XO, XUV700, BE 6, XEV 9e) is SUVs. When SUVs are 65%+ of the market, being SUV-only stops being a niche strategy and becomes a direct beneficiary of the segment mix shift. Its 20% UV growth is more modest than Maruti's or Tata's percentage gains, largely because Mahindra's SUV volumes were already running high a year ago — there's less of a low-base effect flattering the number.
Hyundai — a record month built on Creta and exports
Hyundai Motor India posted its highest-ever monthly total sales of 75,360 units (domestic plus exports), up 25.4% year-on-year. Domestic sales were 54,210 units (+23.3%), and exports were 21,150 units (+31.4%) — described by the company as the highest export volume in more than 100 months. The Creta remained Hyundai's best-seller at 18,088 units, with the i20 posting 6,738 units.
Our verdict on Hyundai
Hyundai's story this month is really two stories. Domestically, it's the Creta doing the heavy lifting — one model accounts for roughly a third of Hyundai's entire domestic volume, which is both a strength (a genuinely dominant mid-size SUV) and a concentration risk if Creta demand ever cools. The more interesting number is exports: a 100-month high suggests Hyundai India is increasingly being used as a manufacturing and export hub for the wider Hyundai-Kia group, not just a domestic-demand story.
Toyota — steady, but the slowest grower among the top six
Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 32,516 units in total, with domestic sales of 30,516 units, up just 4.65% year-on-year — the smallest percentage gain of any major manufacturer this month. Year-to-date (January-July), Toyota's domestic sales stand at 2,33,854 units, up 13%.
Our verdict on Toyota
Toyota's modest July growth isn't a demand problem — its year-to-date number is still healthy at 13%. It's more likely that Toyota's hybrid-heavy, higher-ASP portfolio (Hyryder, Innova Hycross, Fortuner, Camry) was less exposed to the GST relief that specifically targeted smaller, cheaper cars, and Toyota didn't have as weak a July 2025 to compare against since its hybrid strategy was already working well a year ago. It's also worth noting Toyota's dealer network — including IndiCar's own primary stock partner — has consistently run lean on Hyryder and Fortuner inventory relative to demand, which caps how much a single month's wholesale number can move even when retail interest is strong.
Kia — Seltos keeps carrying the brand
Kia India dispatched 28,200 units, its best-ever July performance, up 27.4% from 22,135 units a year ago. Year-to-date sales stand at 1,91,949 units (+16.8%). The Seltos has averaged more than 10,000 units a month consistently since the start of the year, and is up 75.7% year-to-date; the Sonet is up 34.5% year-to-date.
Our verdict on Kia
Kia's growth is almost entirely a Seltos story. A single model averaging 10,000+ units a month for seven straight months is an unusually concentrated success — it means Kia's recent facelift and pricing on the Seltos landed exactly where the compact-SUV buyer wanted it, but it also means Kia's overall growth rate will track the Seltos's fortunes closely until a genuinely new model joins the lineup in volume.
JSW MG Motor — the EV-first strategy is paying off
JSW MG Motor India's wholesale volumes reached 8,158 units, up 22% year-on-year — its second consecutive month of highest-ever monthly wholesale. New energy vehicles (EVs and hybrids combined) made up more than 80% of MG's sales mix.
Our verdict on MG
MG is a genuinely different case from every other brand on this list: it's the only major manufacturer where electrified vehicles are the majority of the business, not a growing side-line. Two straight record months suggests the Windsor EV and Comet's pricing and the JSW backing behind manufacturing are converting into real, repeatable volume — not a one-off spike.
Honda — small base, but the growth rate stands out
Honda Cars India sold 8,284 units in total, with domestic sales of 6,014 units, up 48% from 4,050 units in July 2025.
Our verdict on Honda
Honda's percentage growth is eye-catching but needs context — its domestic base is still the smallest of any mainstream brand in this report, so the same absolute increase in units produces a much larger percentage move than it would for Maruti or Hyundai. That said, 48% growth off any base signals the Elevate and City are finding buyers Honda was losing to Hyundai and Kia in recent years.
Nissan — the biggest percentage mover, on the back of one launch
Nissan India's domestic wholesales rose 218% year-on-year and 50% month-on-month to 4,518 units, aided by the start of Tekton customer deliveries on July 20, following its debut on July 9. The Tekton is Nissan's third India model alongside the Magnite and Gravite.
Our verdict on Nissan
This is the most base-effect-driven number in the entire report. Nissan's July 2025 volumes were unusually low, so a 218% jump looks dramatic but starts from a small denominator. What's genuinely new is the Tekton — Nissan going from two models to three in one month is a real portfolio expansion, and dealer-level demand for it (deliveries began just 11 days after debut) will tell the real story over the next two or three months, not this single data point.
Skoda, Volkswagen, Renault, Citroen — figures not yet out for July
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India and Renault India don't disclose July-specific wholesale figures on the same August 1 cycle as the manufacturers above — their most recently verified numbers are for June 2026 and H1 2026. Skoda posted a record H1 2026 (38,894 units, +7.5% YoY) led by the Kylaq, while Volkswagen's June wholesales fell roughly 20% year-on-year even as combined Skoda-VW group sales for the month came to 8,687 units. Renault posted 4,063 units in June (+55% YoY), with the Triber accounting for roughly 46% of its volume and the newer Duster adding momentum at 1,011 units. We'll update this report once their July numbers are confirmed rather than estimate them.
The luxury segment — reported half-yearly, not monthly
India's luxury manufacturers (Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, JLR) don't release monthly wholesale figures the way mass-market brands do — the most recent verified numbers are for H1 2026. Mercedes-Benz retained the overall lead, with the E-Class LWB as its best-seller and EVs (led by the CLA Electric) reaching a 14% share of its mix. BMW posted the fastest luxury growth at 17% YoY, with SUVs at 65% of its volume and EV sales up 78% YoY to become India's best-selling luxury EV brand. Audi grew a more modest 3% YoY to 2,748 units in H1, having launched only the SQ8 during the period.
What this means if you're buying this month
A record wholesale month for most brands is generally good news for a buyer — it usually means dealers are well-stocked and discount season is active, since manufacturers push volume through the channel with schemes rather than let dealer lots sit empty. It's also a reminder that wholesale numbers measure what factories shipped to dealers, not what actually left showrooms with a customer — if you're negotiating in August, ask specifically about a dealer's July retail (not billing) numbers and current stock age, since a strong wholesale month can just as easily mean a dealer is sitting on unsold July stock they're now motivated to clear.
If you're shopping in the segments driving this month's numbers — compact SUVs like the Grand Vitara, Hyryder, or Thar Roxx — IndiCar can check live dealer stock and today's actual on-road pricing across brands in one place, rather than you calling five showrooms separately.
