New car booking amount in Mumbai: is it refundable, what the form should say, and how to cancel
By Arjun Ramanarayanan, IndiCar · Published 20 October 2026 · Tips
Maruti Suzuki deducts Rs 500 when you cancel an online booking. One Hyundai Venue buyer was shown a Rs 3,500 charge on a Rs 21,000 booking. This explains what decides your refund and how to cancel.
A new car booking amount may or may not come back in full. How much comes back depends on what your booking form says. Maruti Suzuki's own online cancellation page says it deducts Rs 500. A buyer on a car forum reported a Rs 3,500 charge on a Rs 21,000 Hyundai Venue booking. Two consumer commissions have treated a refused refund as deficiency in service. Read the cancellation terms before you pay, and keep them in writing.
Is a car booking amount refundable?
It depends on the terms of your booking. A booking amount does not buy you the car. Tata Motors' terms for its online truck and bus sales say that accepting a booking amount shows an intention to sell and does not create a contract of sale.
That matters if you cancel. Until the car is invoiced, you have reserved a car, not bought one. Whether you get all of the money back, or lose a fixed charge, is set by the terms attached to that booking.
How much do buyers pay, and what is deducted on cancellation?
The figures below come from a manufacturer page, buyer reports and consumer cases. None of the cases is from Mumbai. They show how far terms can differ from one booking to the next.
| Case | Booking amount | What happened on cancellation | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Suzuki Arena online booking | Not stated | Rs 500 deducted from the refund | Maruti Suzuki cancel page |
| Hyundai Venue | Rs 21,000 | Rs 3,500 cancellation charge, written on the docket | Buyer report, Team-BHP |
| Kia Sonet | Rs 25,000 | 100% refundable, confirmed in writing by the sales advisor | Buyer report, Team-BHP |
| Mahindra Thar, Ernakulam | Rs 21,000 | Refund refused; consumer commission ruled for the buyer | Law reports |
| Car booking, Yamunanagar | Rs 21,000 | Refund ordered with interest, plus Rs 51,000 compensation and Rs 11,000 litigation costs | The Tribune |
The Venue and Sonet rows show the main point. Two similar bookings came with opposite terms, and in both cases the terms were on paper.
What should the booking form say about cancellation?
It should say what you get back and when. In the Venue case reported on Team-BHP, the Rs 3,500 charge was printed on the docket and pointed out by the sales advisor. In the Sonet case, the full refund was confirmed in writing.
Some policies depend on timing. One dealership's published policy gives a full refund if you cancel before the car is billed at the plant, and 50% of the booking amount if you cancel after. That policy also says refunds are paid by bank cheque in the name of the person who made the booking.
Look for these on any booking form:
- The cancellation charge, as a rupee figure
- Whether the refund changes once the car is billed or allotted
- How the refund is paid and in whose name
- How long the refund takes
How do you cancel a Maruti Suzuki online booking?
You cancel online, and Rs 500 is deducted. According to Maruti's Arena cancel-booking page, the rest goes back to your original payment method within 3-5 business days.
- Take a screenshot of the cancellation message. Maruti asks customers to keep it as confirmation.
- Check with your bank 5-10 days after the refund to confirm the money has arrived, as Maruti advises.
- If your e-booking is more than 6 months old, Maruti says the refund has to be made offline by the showroom. The showroom executive asks for an OTP to complete the cancellation.
What happens if you cancel a booking that is on a car loan?
You may pay interest even though you never take the car. According to a post on the car-buying help site MyCarHelpline, a financed booking has to be cancelled with both the bank and the dealer.
In that process, the dealer returns the disbursed loan amount and your margin money to the bank. The bank then deducts interest from the margin money before you get it back.
What can you do if a booking refund is refused?
You can go to a consumer commission, and keep evidence from the start. In Ernakulam, a buyer paid Rs 21,000 to book a Mahindra Thar. He cancelled after being told delivery would be delayed indefinitely, and formally asked for a refund.
The Ernakulam Consumer Commission held that not refunding a car booking advance after cancellation amounts to deficiency in service and unfair trade practice. His evidence included a letter to the dealer asking for cancellation and a refund, plus a bank record of the payment.
In Yamunanagar, the District Consumer Commission ordered a dealer and a manufacturer to refund a Rs 21,000 booking amount with interest. It also awarded Rs 51,000 in compensation and Rs 11,000 for litigation expenses. These cases are from Kerala and Haryana, so they show how commissions have reasoned, not a Maharashtra rule.
How does the booking amount fit into the on-road price? A Skoda Slavia example
The on-road price covers more than the car's sticker price. Here is the cheapest Skoda Slavia, the 1.0 Classic Petrol Manual, registered to an individual in Mumbai. These figures come from IndiCar's price list dated 1 October 2026.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Ex-showroom price | Rs 9,99,900 |
| RTO registration and road tax (Mumbai, individual) | Rs 1,21,659 |
| Insurance (first-year comprehensive) | Rs 62,089 |
| FASTag | Rs 850 |
| On-road price | Rs 11,84,498 |
On-road minus ex-showroom comes to Rs 1,84,598 on this variant. IndiCar prices 12 Slavia variant and powertrain combinations, all petrol, with manual and automatic gearboxes.
The range runs up to the 1.5 Monte Carlo Petrol Automatic at Rs 22,52,842 on-road. The gap from the cheapest to the most expensive is Rs 10,68,344. For any other car, the on-road price calculator shows the same itemised breakup.
