Electric vs petrol car running cost in Mumbai: home charging rates, petrol price and EV tax savings

Petrol costs Rs 111.21 a litre in Mumbai. Home charging on Tata Power costs Rs 5.05 to Rs 15.80 a unit by slab, plus wheeling and duty. Here is how to read both, and what the EV tax waiver saves.

Petrol in Mumbai costs Rs 111.21 a litre. Charging an electric car at home costs whatever your next unit of electricity costs. On Tata Power's residential tariff that is Rs 5.05 to Rs 15.80 a unit depending on your slab, before a Rs 2.40 wheeling charge and electricity duty. The most certain EV saving in Maharashtra is the road tax, registration and toll waivers under the state's EV policy, not the charging bill.

Your cost per kilometre depends on how far your car goes on a litre or a unit, and that varies by model and by how you drive. This guide sets out the rates you will actually pay in Mumbai so you can work out your own number.

What does petrol cost in Mumbai today?

Petrol costs Rs 111.21 a litre, according to Petrol price in India Today for 21 October 2026. Asianet News shows the same figure, with diesel at Rs 97.83. Goodreturns reported Rs 111.21 on 20 October, unchanged from the previous day.

India's oil marketing companies set fuel prices daily and typically revise them at 6 AM IST. On a petrol car, your cost is the litre price multiplied by the litres you use, and the litre price moves only when the oil companies move it.

What does home charging cost in Mumbai?

The rate depends on which company supplies your building and how much your household already uses. TheDiscomBill lists these FY 2026-27 domestic slab ranges:

SupplierDomestic slab range per unit
AdaniRs 2.65 to Rs 8.35
BESTRs 2.02 to Rs 11.25
Tata PowerRs 1.90 to Rs 10.24

TheDiscomBill also lists electricity duty at 16 per cent. The Tata Power range above differs from the EBBillCalculator figures in the next section, which list Rs 5.05 to Rs 15.80 for residential single-phase rates. The sources do not explain the gap, so check your own bill for the rate you pay.

How does Tata Power bill the units you use for charging?

On Tata Power, a unit costs Rs 5.05 if your home uses 100 units or fewer in a month, and Rs 15.80 once you cross 500. These are EBBillCalculator's FY 2026-27 residential single-phase rates:

Monthly unitsRate per unit
1 to 100Rs 5.05
101 to 300Rs 10.25
301 to 500Rs 13.80
Above 500Rs 15.80

According to EBBillCalculator, wheeling and tax on sale are added to these rates. TheDiscomBill's Tata Power table puts the wheeling charge at Rs 2.40 on every unit.

Why your slab decides whether an EV is cheap to run

Charging units sit on top of what your home already uses, so they are billed in whatever slab your total reaches. A flat that normally stays within 100 units can move into the Rs 10.25 band once charging is added. A household already above 300 units pays Rs 13.80 or Rs 15.80 for each extra unit, plus wheeling and duty.

Look at your last few bills before you decide. If you are already in the top slabs, use those rates, not the lowest one, when you compare charging against Rs 111.21 a litre for petrol.

What does public charging cost in Mumbai?

An older report put the MERC-approved EV charging station tariff at Rs 7.25 a unit, with a Rs 1.50 a unit discount for charging between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. That figure is dated, so treat it as a rough reference rather than today's rate.

The night discount matters if you charge outside home. For most owners with parking, the home bill is the number to plan around.

What does Maharashtra's EV policy save you?

All EVs registered during the Maharashtra EV Policy 2025 period get a 100 per cent exemption from motor vehicle tax and registration fees, according to Down To Earth. MyMotor also reports that EVs sold and registered in Maharashtra during the policy period are eligible for complete motor vehicle tax exemption.

  • Tolls: the policy gives a 100 per cent toll exemption for passenger vehicles on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Samruddhi Mahamarg and Atal Setu, according to Down To Earth. CarDekho also reports a 100 per cent toll waiver for EVs on major highways and expressways under the policy.
  • Purchase subsidy: the Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh four-wheeler incentive is restricted to transport and commercial vehicles such as taxis and fleet vehicles, according to AllIndiaEV. MeraEV says there is no direct purchase subsidy for personal four-wheeler EVs under the 2025-2030 policy. MyMotor's summary mentions a subsidy of up to Rs 1.5 lakh, but with two sources saying the car incentive is for commercial use, do not count on one for a private car.

If you regularly use the Expressway or Atal Setu, the toll waiver is a running-cost saving that a petrol car does not get.

Electric or petrol: which costs less to run in Mumbai?

This guide cannot give a single answer, because the sources give slab rates but no cost per kilometre or efficiency figures. What is clear is that a Maharashtra-registered EV skips road tax and registration fees during the policy period and pays no tolls on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Samruddhi Mahamarg and Atal Setu.

Charging cost depends on your slab. If your flat already uses more than 300 units a month, each charging unit costs Rs 13.80 or Rs 15.80, plus Rs 2.40 wheeling and 16 per cent duty. Work it out with your own car's efficiency and your own bill, and remember the Rs 111.21 petrol rate can change daily.
